Covid-19 statement for University admissions teams
Students are applying to University this year after the most disrupted period of education. We acknowledge that all students across the country will have been affected by the covid-19 pandemic, but we want to take this opportunity to put the experience of students at Bradgate Sixth Form into context.
Bradgate Sixth Form is a 16 – 19 provision in Leicestershire and has 170 students on roll. Bradgate Sixth Form is part of Wreake Valley Academy which has 880 students on roll.
The location of Bradgate Sixth Form has meant that a number of students live in areas which have had consistently high levels of Covid-19. Leicester City and the surrounding areas have been subjected to greater lockdown measures (since Spring 2020) and many of our students live in parts of Leicester that have had the highest rates of infection. This has undoubtedly meant students have spent a considerable amount of time remote learning and not receiving face to face teaching.
During lockdown students were directed to engage in remote learning which involved teachers setting work online as well as timetabled live lessons on MS Teams. Student access to live lessons was varied due to personal circumstances.
Work experience for all students was due to take place in June 2021 but was cancelled. Students were again directed to virtual work experience opportunities and MOOCs to develop their research and knowledge in specific areas.
We also took the decision not to run our face-to-face enrichment programme due the high levels of Covid-19 within our area. This has therefore meant that student access to a ‘super curriculum’ has been limited within the last year.
Year 12 Forecast Exams (current Year 13 students) were postponed until late June 2021 in order for teachers to ascertain students’ knowledge within subject areas and have also been used to help determine predicted grades.
