A Level Further Maths

Why study this subject?
Students who have enjoyed studying Higher Tier Maths at GCSE and have achieved a grade 7 or above should consider studying this course. Students considering Further Maths must also study Maths A level. This provides an excellent option at A level if students are considering going on to study maths at university. Further Maths makes the transition from Sixth Form to university courses, which are maths rich, that much easier as more of the first year content will be familiar. This is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens understanding beyond the standard A Level Maths, and provides the opportunity to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts. The course content includes:
Pure Mathematics: Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Further Vectors, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions, Differential equations, Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry.
Two optional choices from: Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete
How is this course assessed?
There are three exam papers of two hours which are taken at the end of Year 13
Paper 1 Pure Mathematics
Paper 2 Pure Mathematics
Paper 3 Two papers one on each of the chosen options
There is no coursework in A Level Further Maths.
Where can this subject lead?
Further Maths is now becoming an entry requirement at many universities for a widening variety of subjects. The Russell Group universities lists Further Maths as a facilitating subject. For certain subjects at university the addition of A Level Further Maths can result in a reduced offer. The skills students develop can lead on to higher education options in many areas including mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, medicine, psychology, actuary, teaching, genetics, lawyer and computer programming.
